Cronsell asked:

Where I am fishing is a large lake and I am fishing from shore. I have no expeirience in catching walleye, I would really like to catch one. What are good baits for them? Rigs? Locations? time of day? I really need as many tips as possible, anything helps. Thanks!

For location, I would look for current areas, such as streams entering/leaving the lake, or rip rap areas. Consult a topographical map of the lake, and look for a point coming off of shore. If there’s a dock on or by the point, ask for permission from the land owner to fish off of it. Your best bets, as far as time of day, would be late afternoon, before dark, till early/mid morning. You could use a slip bobber rig with either a minnow or a leech, cast jigs tipped with a half of a ‘crawler, a minnow, or a leech, or just a twister tail or shad body. You can cast crank baits, too. With the slip bobber, try to adjust the depth so you’re about 1′ off of bottom. With jigs, cast them out and bounce them back across the bottom, or cast out and count down to see how long it takes for them to hit bottom. Then, on your next cast, start retrieving before they hit bottom, using a swimming retrieve. With crank baits, use one that can reach the depth you’re fishing, preferably a floating one. Then, when you’re making your retrieve and you hit bottom, stop for a few seconds and let the bait float back up a little before resuming your retrieve.

If it’s summer time where you are most of the eyes are in deeper water this time of year in or next to the channel. They will however come onto the flats to feed on baitfish at night.

Bait’s & lures- Fathead Minnows, Leech’s, Shiner’s, Nightcrawlers. Deep-diving Cranks, Jig & plastic Curly-tailed Grub, Suspending wide wobble Cranks.

Rigs- Lindy Rig, Float & Jig Rig, Spinner Rig with Nightcrawler, plain Float Rig.

Locations- Generally, Walleye are found in deeper areas during the day and move up to shallow water during low light periods, (dawn, dusk & night).

Best time of day to catch Walleye- Your best times would generally be during dusk and at night. However, sometimes Mid-day sunny conditions can concentrate fish on typical deepwater drop-offs and rocky reefs.

Your “best bet” for catching Walleye during the day- Trolling a Lindy Rig or Spinner Rig with Nightcrawler around the first deepwater drop in 15-25FT, (Walleye tend to suspend or orient around rocky/rubble lake bottom). Slow troll until you catch a fish, then log where you catch them. If you get into a concentration of fish, start casting a Jig & Minnow or Leech.

Your “best bet” for catching Walleye during night-time hours- Troll or cast nearshore weed-lines or offshore weed-beds in 6-8FT.
