Spring Walleye Fishing

Walleye fishing opening weekend is the third Saturday in May.

After spawning, walleye are hungry and school together more in the spring – an exciting time to catch large numbers of walleye!

Walleye will be active and feeding in the warmer shallower water the majority of the day; this is where bait fish and insect larvae are most plentiful.

There is less forage because the current year’s bait fish crop is unavailable; walleye are feeding on larval insects and last year’s bait fish, which have been drastically reduced by predation over the winter.

Cold Spring Waters

When fishing in the spring, keep in mind that the water is still very cold. The walleyes metabolism is low and they cannot make long charges to capture bait. Walleye prefer minnows during the spring, often targeting  year-old bait fish such as perch and shiners.  The size of your minnow should be bigger – ask for large sized minnows, three to four inches long.

The cold spring water also slows the bait fish. Present your bait with a long cast and a slow retrieve, vertical jigging or a slow troll to find the schools of walleye.

From Shore – Any Time Of Day

During the spring, casting from shore can be a successful way to catch walleye in the shallows. The angle of the sun is low enough to reflect the sun off the lake surface.  Even at high noon, the light intensity in the spring of year does not affect the walleye enough to stop them from feeding.
